Acquired May 1952. From the collection of the Earl of Harewood. Originally the property of Charles John Canning, Earl Canning (1812-1862), Governor General of India 1856-1862. Succeeded his mother as Viscount Canning, 1837, created Earl Canning 1859.

Physical Description

Double side-by-side Barrels with browned finish inscribed CHARLES LANCASTER. PATENT. 151 NEW BOND ST LONDON. Stamped with London proof marks and serial numbers 1261 and 1262 and initials C L. Locks engraved with scrolling foliage. Steel mounts formerly blued. Engraved with foliage and sporting scenes. Grip-type safety catches behind trigger-guards. Small silver scutcheon plates engraved with addorsed Cs surmounted by a viscount’s coronet. Brass bound mahogany case lined with buff-coloured leather with accessories consisting of two leather covered powder-flasks with German silver mounts inscribed Lord Canning; four shot-flasks, two large and two small, also with German silver mounts, the nozzles engraved with the initial C under a viscount’s coronet; two spare lockscrews, a brass barrel-cleaning brush, a bag of percussion tubes and a leather frog for a loading rod.
