Transferred via Amnesty 1946 from COD (Central Ordnance Deopt) Weedon. (Weedon being the central collection point for all Police forces and surrendered weapons.) Authority for tranfer and issue is under War Office file no. BM/306/46/J.MF.57/SA/, recieved February 1948.

Physical Description

The strap of the false breech with the name of the owner, Back action lock engraved with scroll foliage and place made. Half stock of birds-eye maple with blued steel mounts engraved with foliage.The breech consists of a horizontal revolving plug operated by a lever on the left side.
A .40 calibre single barrelled, breech loading, percussion rifle, with a browned barrel. The breech block is 1” wide x 1 3/16” long, the 1” wide octagonal barrel, inlaid with a gold stag and trees, changes to 12 sides and tapers to ¾” over the first 6”, there is then a baluster turn and the round section tapers from ¾” to 5/8” at the muzzle. The barrel has 7 groove rifling and is fitted with a post foresight, a bottom rib and two ramrod pipes and is secured with a hooked breech and a single cross bolt. The ebony ramrod has a brass tip.
The rotating tap action breech is fitted with a drum and nipple ignition system and a 3 ¾” long operating lever on the left hand side.
The one piece birds eye maple stock is chequered at the wrist with a blued steel butt plate, a vacant lozenge shaped silver escutcheon behind the top strap, a horn tip, german silver escutcheons for the cross bolt and a baluster turned ramrod pipe with a crown finial.
The back action lockplate is engraved with acanthus scrolls, a wild boar and sunbursts to the pins and is fitted with a dolphin style hammer, the top strap is engraved with acanthus scrolls and incorporates a screw operated retractable rear sight, the trigger guard strap is extended to form a pistol grip and the rigger guard is engraved with acanthus scrolls ending with a pineapple finial. There is a horn grip/support screwed to the front of the trigger guard bow.
