Provenance

Presented by the Head Priest of Toshogu Shrine, Nikko, 19 September 1991, on the occasion of the twinning of the Royal Armouries with the Toshogu Shrine.

Physical Description

Made of copper, in the form of a platform curved in front of the foot, with a buckle at the top. It is decorated on the exterior with punched and chiselled chrysanthemeum flowers and foliage at the front, with the aoi mon of the Tokugawa at the centre, and on the base with scales. The main decorative elements are gilt. The inside is decorated with a geometrical diaper. The sides are punched with scrolling foliage.


It has a pine presentation box inscribed on the lid with the date and provenance, and a cushion covered with purple silk.

Inscriptions and Marks

The box is inscribed on the outside 'Toshogu zoei no oho, aoi mon hachi-ri do tsukuru go abumi' (copper presentation stirrup with hollyhock mon from the Toshogu site); inside 'Nikko Toshogu 1991 nen (Heisei san nen) kyu gatsu'
