Physical Description

Modern wooden grip of 'writhen' form.
Modern pommel of wood and fluted form.
Quillons are flattened in form, horizontal and curve gently outwards towards the ring guard. Chiselled with floral patterns. The ring guard is similarly decorated, being flattened and curved slightly down, over the knuckles of the hand.
The blade of steel is straight and double edged, being of hollow ground, diamond section. The short ricasso is etched on one side with 'RE' and a date which could either be '1608' or possibly '1668'. The gilt decoration on the reverse of the ricasso has been worn away. The blade is similarly decorated on both sides with floral gilt etchings and an inscription which has been partly worn away:

A copper alloy mark is inlayed on both faces of the blade, resembling a crowned 'R'
