Purchased Christies, 9 April 1863. From the Codrington collection, originally from Mysore.

Physical Description

The blade is of flattened section, waved with the remains of shallow fullers showing towards the hilt. No mixed metal or grain is now showing, the surface having been polished smooth. The blade is riveted to a katar hilt having a fleur-de-lys shaped extension for the purpose. The remainder of the hilt is decorated with raised edges chiselled with tiny zig-zag pattern and fitted with two cross-bars with turned knops, the cross bars themselves being connected by further decorative turnings.


Dimensions: The length of the blade is 328 mm, the overall length being 524 mm. Weight: The weight of the katar is 0.448 kg.
