Provenance

Probably the weapon illustrated in Skinners 'History of London',1795, and described as 'The Lochaber axe with which Col Gardener was killed'.

Physical Description

Long, convex blade with reinforced point, the lower end extended as a strap secured to the modern wooden haft by a single screw. The haft fits into a triangular socket made in one with the back near its centre. A series of circular piercings follows the line of the back of the blade and back of the socket, where there are four holes. There is a small iron stud on the inside of the haft below the socket. An iron show is secured to the haft by one screw in each langet.
