From the Norton Hall Collection . Presented by the National Art-Collections Fund, 1942. Formally in the collection of Beriah Botfield (1807 - 1863) at Norton Hall, Northamptonshire. (Norton Hall collection no. 258) This collection would appear to have been formed in the 1840's. Norton Hall was acquired by Beriah Botfield's grandfather (who died in 1801), Thomas Botfield acquired it from the descendants of Nicholas Breton. Beriah Botfield restored Norton Hall to its former glories. The collection was finally purchased, with the aid of the National Art-Collections Fund, for the nation from Lady Beatrice Thynne on the occasion of her death in 1942. The purchase was negotiated with Lady Weymouth who was acting as attorney for Lord Weymouth (who was away on active service), who was tenant-for-life of the property (the collection had been settled on Lord Weymouth for life).

Physical Description

The entire stock is of gilded metal deeply chiselled and chased with flowers and strapwork, on a stippled background. The straps, and interspersed diamonds are further decorated with niello and silver wire. The grips are long, slim and terminate in a small pointed butt in the Balkan manner. Flat lockplate with a semi-waterproof pan, roller frizzen and flat swan necked cock only sparsely decorated with engraving. On the plate is a spurious signature.The barrel is octagonal at the breech becoming round with an elegant moulding and chiselled foliage separating the two regions. On the top flat are two groups of spurious letters: One of three I's separated by small curls, the second being IAIII again with small curls between the letters. On the left flat is an engraved mark of three stalked flowers arranged radially. The tang of the barrel is covered by a gilt plate with niello that also carries a rear sight.


Dimensions: The overall length of the gun is 490 mm, the length of the barrel being 290 mm. Weight: The weight of the gun is 1.25 kg.


The bore of the gun is 17 mm.
