Provenance

Found, accessioned from Lanthorn Tower room 5, July 1987. Possibly old Tower collection, and most probably brought to Britain as a souvenir of the battle of Omdurman around 1900.

Physical Description

Tall conical skull made in two halves brazed together with an additional plate forming a downturned rim, the lower edge pierced for an aventail. On top is a large quadrangular spike and at the front a nasal with spatulate ends fastened in position by a screw. The surface is decorated by gold and silver overlay with a wide band below the spike from which depend six trapezoidal shapes. The surfaces between these are silvered. The lowest plate is gilded. One copper ring remains of the aventail.

Dimensions: The diameter is between 205 mm and 218, the depth being 220 mm. Weight: The weight of the helmet is 1.4 kg.
