Purchased at auction from Messrs Oxenham's, 21st and 22nd July 1842.

Physical Description

Octagonal Barrel with foresight and tubular backsight. Pan with pivoted cover and flash-guard. Lock of similar type to those of the three preceding examples.
Stock with butt of cheek-butt form but of sufficient length to reach the shoulder. The right side of the butt is stamped or branded with an eagle displayed while between the lock-screws is the letter A. In addition, both sides of the butt are incised with a marking of uncertain nature.

Inscriptions and Marks

A maker's mark the letters S K over a shield (?). is stamped on either side of the breech and under the backsight the top flat being incised with the letter A

Notes

The letter A stamped on the barrel and stock is the mark of the arsenal of Aarau, Switzerland. A similar gun is in the Ernest Berger collection. See 'Armes Anciennes des collections Suisses', Geneva, 1972, Nos 339.
