Physical Description

Long, heavy octagonal barrel with back and foresights, the top flat incised with the date 1562. There is a recoil block or 'hook' on the underside eighteen inches from the muzzle projecting through the fore-end. It is stamped on the right side with a crescent shaped mark. Lock fitted with pan with a pivoted cover. The match-holder is mounted behind the pan working with a forward movement and has an external spring. The lock has a scear, the nose of which projects through the lockplate and engages with the toe of the match-holder which has to be cocked by hand.
Stock with straight shoulder-butt. Steel trigger-guard without indentations for the fingers. There is a War Department mark on the underside of the stock by the screw securing the breech-strap. The barrel-bed is incised with the number VIII. _ _
