Excavated from the River Thames.

Physical Description

River find. Bone grip made in two halves, fitted around and secured to tang. Cap end of grip divides into two kidney-shaped swellings with a small rivet on each side and three rivets down the grip, widening towards the blade. On one side, the grip is decorated with concentric circles. Short ricasso 25 mm with rectangular peg-guard, flaring out to form scalloped tongue, protruding at right angles to blade.


Straight, single-edged blade tapering to spear point. Edge of blade fairly pitted. Indistinguaishable copper alloy insert 56 mm below guard, presumably a mark?
