From the armoury of Hagia Irene, Istanbul. Purchased via Robert Curzon, c. 1842. Lent to the British Museum in 1914, returned 1954.

Physical Description

Large, circular, convex centre plate with an embossed centre. There is a circular sunburst or floral petal effect created by equal length, radiating fluted markings (109 in all). There are three plates attached with bands of mail; a lower back plate and two side plates. The two side plates have holes punched around their edges while the lower back plate has holes punched in its two shorter sides and across its face. The embossed centre of the main circular back plate has a hole drilled in it (possibly for display purposes).
