Probably Tower arsenal. First accessioned on return from loan to Junior Leaders Regiment, R.C.T., R.A.O.C., Colerne, Nr Chippenham, Wilts (Loan L204), c. Feb./ March 1989.

Physical Description

General Type Description: Brass cruciform hilt of 'Roman' form with flattened, oval-sectioned pommel, swollen ribbed grip, and quillons with disc terminals decorated with incised concentric circles. Straight, single-edged blade of wedge section, with a short ricasso, tapering slightly and terminating in a double-edged spear point.

Dimensions: Overall length: 716 mm (28.2 in.), Blade length: 569 mm (22.4 in), Blade width: 34 mm (1.3 in.) Weight: 985 g. (2 lb. 2 3/4 oz.)

Inscriptions and Marks

On blade, on inside, on ricasso, stamped: crown over '16' (SIZE?).On blade, on outside, on ricasso, stamped: remains of a crested helmet (the mark of Kirschbaum of Solingen).

When first being catalogued in Feb./March, 1989, a green plastic tag stamped in white 'S4' was noted on the ricasso, inside the hand (since removed).
