On hilt, on knuckle-guard, engraved: @D 2 R H B@.On blade, on in/outside, towards hilt, stamped: 'C'(? - incomplete) over '4'.

This sword appears to be of the identical pattern to IX.349. It has the same maker's name and probably the same proof mark, C over 4. IX.349 is marked to the 10th Royal Hussars (see STAR entry for more information and others of similar pattern).
The D 2 R H B marking on the knuckle-guard stands for: D Battery, 2nd Royal Horse Brigade (formed in 1861 from the Bengal Horse Artillery when the East India Company's forces were incorporated into the British Army (information supplied by David Harding, 17/09/2012 (see inv. file)
