Dagger (peshkabz) and scabbard

Object Number

Old Tower Collection

Physical Description

The blade is of small size but of typical T-sectioned shape. It is fitted to a hilt faced with scales of pink-hued hardstone (possibly amythest) over silver foil with irregular orange patches. The bolster and strip around the hilt appear to be gold engraved with flowers. The hilt scales are attached by gold rivets containing green cabouchon stones in the centre, probably emeralds.

The scabbard is of wood covered with red velvet, with a seam hemmed in gilt braid. The scabbard is fitted with a chape and locket of gold painted with multicoloured enamels depicting a variety of flowers, and bands of chevron ornament. The chape terminates in a delicate finial in the form of a blue duck's head.
