Physical Description

The lock is of the 'French Lock' design. The lockplate is engraved with 'E. Nicholson' for the maker. It is held in place by 3 sidenails and is decorated with crude foliate engraving.

The stock is club shaped. It has a sling bar and ring. There is an associated, one-piece, ramrod with an iron disc at tip which swells out from the rod. The ramrod is held in place by the front barrel band and an additional ramrod pipe which is pinned into the stock. The stock has been struck '3' which has been overstruck '28'. There is a second struck '28'

The barrel is held in by one pin at the tang and two barrel bands. The barrel has an octagonal breech which extends for 4 3/4 in. This blends into a 2 3/8 in. section having 16 facets before a baluster which separates this from a 3 1/4 in. round section with side flats. A second baluster divides this from a round section that extends to the muzzle. There is no backsight but there is a blade foresight. On the top left flat of the barrel is struck a sunburst with a face, over EN, the last overstruck, in part, by the proofmark of the Gunmakers' Company, London.
