Physical Description

The lock is of type 2 design and is held in place by 3 sidenails. A modern screw secures the buffer.


The stock has a club butt and a ramrod which may be original. There is a resin repair to the toe of the butt and some resin patching of the fore-end.


The barrel has an octagonal breech which extends for 12 1/2 in. where there is a baluster. After this the barrel is round. The backsight is missing and there is a bead foresight. This barrel was originally on a matchlock as can be seen from the presence of a slot in the breech for the flashguard of the matchlock. The vent has possibly been bushed

Inscriptions and Marks

On the underside of the lockplate, towards the rear is an XII, and an XI or IX near the tip of the mainspring.On the top left flat of the breech is a London Gunmakers' Company proofmark. There are also two wedge-shaped cuts in the top right flat
