Physical Description

Hilt dated 1737-1738. Silver hilt. Knuckle-guard pinning into a sleeve attached to the pommel. Quillon block decorated with longitudinal fluting. Rear quillon of droplet form joined to the knuckle-guard on the outside of the hand by a loop-guard. Cap pommel with a pronounced tang-button and decorated with radial fluting. Small ferrule, the lateral moulding emphasised by line engraving. Attached to the blade end of the ferrule is a large elliptical silver washer in place of a buff-piece. Tapering agate grip of oval section.


Slightly curved, single-edged blade with a false edge for approx. the last 140 mm (5.5 in) and a full-length fuller on either side.

Inscriptions and Marks

On the hilt, on the inside at in middle of the knuckle-guard, stamped: (reading from pommel): the Sterling standard mark; and the London town mark and date letter 'b' for 1737-8.
