Physical Description

Flat, stepped lock-plate and swan-necked cock decorated with floral scroll-work. The lock-plate is also engraved ahead of the cock STANTON. The frizzle-spring finial is chiselled in the form of an acorn. Walnut full-stock, the last 5 ½ in replaced. It is carved around the barrel-tang with a shell and floral scroll-work. The butt and fore-end are decorated with inlays of silver sheet and wire, consisting of floral scrolls involving honeysuckle, flower heads, dragon’s heads and, on the underside of the butt, a bird. The fore-end is further decorated on its upper edge by a band of wave ornament, extending to the muzzle. Silver furniture. The butt-plate, escutcheon, trigger-guard and rammer tail-pipe are engraved with floral and shell scroll-work. The rigger-guard has a forward finial out and engraved as an acorn. The side-plate is pierced and chased with floral scrolls. The two forward rammer pipes are replacements. Bright-steel two-stage barrel with gold vent. The octagonal breech is engraved on the top flat with rococo scroll-work involving the address STANTON HOLBORN LONDON. It has been stamped later with the Irish census number KD (KILDARÈ) – 4436. On the left flat at the breech are stamped Ordnance private proof marks. The change of section from octagonal to round is covered by a transverse moulding and a band of chiselled leaf-work. Set into the muzzle is a silver leaf fore-sight with an inset base in the form of a four-pointed star. The blued tang is decorated with rococo scroll-work and scooped as back-sight.
