Physical Description

Bright plain steel lock signed GRIFFIN with a sliding engraved panel safety catch behind the cock. Full walnut stock with cheek-piece. Steel mounts engraved with rococo scrollwork, a silver escutcheon pierced and engraved with the arms, motto and supporters of John Carmichael, third Earl of Hyndford (1701-1767), the arms superimposed on a Prussian eagle and surrounded by the Order of the Thistle. The barrel is held by three pierced and engraved silver bands (the rear one forming a saddle rearsight) which are locked in position on to springs let into the stock. The buttplate is engraved with an armoury number N.14. Blued barrel, the octagonal breech inlaid with gold stamps of Ignacio Barcina.
