Purchased from the National Magazine Co. (W R Hearst collection) October 1952, with the help of the Pilgrim Trust, National Art Collections Fund and a special Exchequer Grant. This is one of 52 items purchased together. (Hearst inv. no. A.405). Purchased at the Cologne sale 21 June 1934, lot 766. Previously in the Konsul A D Hans C Leiden collection and before that in the Spitzer collection, Paris.

Physical Description

Decorated with silver wire, bone and ivory. Slender, octagonal barrel delicately inlaid in silver with foliage and trophies. Lock of the French type with separately mounted mainspring, inlaid with silver en suite with the barrel. Stock with fluted, pear shaped butt inlaid in stag’s horn with a close set pattern of birds, animals and foliage, occasional inlays stained green.
