Physical Description

Roped comb of moderate height. At the base of the skull is a row of lining-strap rivets with brass rosette washers and at the back a tubular plume-holder. The lining-strap of buff leather. Entire helmet is elaborately decorated with etching. A large oval panel on either side of the skull contains on left a figure of St. Barbara and on right a pocket sun-dial, an 'impresa' of the Piccolomini, these panels being surrounded by trophies of arms. A rondel on the comb contains on the right the arms of the Archduke Ferdinand of Tyrol, on the left a Pelican in its Piety, with floral scrolls on either side.

This appears to be a genuine German morion of c.1560 with later decoration. There is no known association of the Piccolomini and Archduke Ferdinand, and the trophies contain objects which appear to be later than the helmet.
