Date

1650

Object Number

Provenance

Tower arsenal.

Physical Description

The breastplate is of duplex construction, the inner layer formed by the reuse of an earlier breastplate whose flange and neck were bordered by rivets, and main edges bordered by incised lines. These are not visible on the interior, showing that the inner plate has been reversed during reuse. The plates are joined by turning the edges of the outer plate over the inner. At either side of the chest are rivet holes for the mushroom-headed studs for the shoulder straps. At either shoulder and side are large pierced suspension holes. There is a proof mark at the centre right. It is russet from the hammer. The mean microhardness of the outer plate is 256 Hv, that of the inner plate 225 Hv.
