Physical Description

Early 18th century holster pistol, decorated in a restrained Baroque style, incorporating aspects of Rococo characteristics, with swan necked cock. Sideplate of foliage and scrollwork perhaps of vines with birds/monster heads. High quality engraved lock plate with scroll work. A grotesque face appears on the top side of the barrel with its mouth open. Two more grotesque faces surround a moulded escutcheon on the grip, left plain it is flanked with foliage and scrollwork. Splendid wood carving on the stock. Continuation of the butt cap metal inlaid into grip at both sides. Curled trigger with scrollwork detail on triggerguard, connecting to a moulded finial of an exotic plant/tree. Two ramrod channels with wooden iron tipped ramrod. The breech tang is engraved with a female figurehead, while the tang screw is also engraved, in a flower style. Trophy of arms engraved towards the breech end of the barrel with the bust of a classical military figure mounted on a plinth, below the engraved number 29. A moulded classical military figure also appears on the butt cap, which seems to be of silver inserted into the metal work of the cap. However unlike XII.10750 this figure is perhaps female, Minerva or a male Mars? Two additional figures appear (head and shoulders) engraved on the side of the butt cap, on the right side a moustached gentleman in classical military dress, and on the left a Roman Emperor is depicted.
