Physical Description

The action externally resembles that of the Winchester underlever rifles, but differs in two important respects, firstly that there is no loading gate on the side of the receiver, it is situated under the action, a spring loaded cover on the underside of the vertical block, the action having to be open to facilitate loading, secondly there is a hinging block, containing a short firing pin, between the external hammer and the sliding bolt, thus the hammer is cocked by the underlever rather than being pushed backwards by a sliding bolt. On the right of the ejector opening is stamped; MODEL 1886, ahead of the opening; CAL 32 SPECIAL, and on the left side; BULLARD REPEATING ARMS COMPANY SPRINGFIELD, MASS, U.S. P.A.T AUG. 16. 1881., a crowned ‘V’ is stamped on the receiver ring. Behind the hammer is stamped: 1829. Two piece stock, plain fore-end, held in place by an iron fore-end cap, plain butt stamped ; 9505, behind the rigger guard, composition buttplate, chequered and bearing; BULLARD REPTG. ARMS Co., above and below a turkey within a rustic border. Full-round tapered blued barrel, foresight dovetailed into muzzle, now missing, backsight a sprung metal tongue dove-tailed into barrel, block sight raised and lowered by a stepped wedge. Stamped at left of breech, London proofmarks, and .300. The magazine tube is situated beneath the barrel and is rather short, less than half the length of the barrel.
