Physical Description

Modified from 1843 model to 1860 model. The barrel is rifled. Lock retained by single sidenail. Unmarked lockplate flat and flush with stock at forward end, surface slight curved at tail. Large cock of typical Piedmontese form. One-piece half length stock. Unmarked iron spring-held barrel band, incorporating the fore-end cap and surrounding the hole for the ramrod. Iron triggerguard of French Model 1822 pattern, long rear tang fitted with a spur for improved grip, and a sling ring, marked F.F. Stock behind triggerguard marked S. Very narrow iron buttplate sloping away to a pronounced lip at toe, tang mark illegible. Full -round tapered barrel, octagonal section 2.25 inches long at the breech. Foresight a crudely made bead attached direct to muzzle, backsight an open notch in a block slightly ahead of the large, centrally placed nipple. Three circular marks on the breech are illegible.
