Physical Description

With original bayonet (X.418). Large lock retained by two cheese-headed side nails. Lockplate of flintlock type, though the lock is not a converted one. Very large odd shaped cock, the nose reaching across almost to the centre of the breech. Full length one piece stock, extending to 4.75 inches from the muzzle. Small iron fore-end cap riveted to fore-end, mark illegible. Two flat iron spring held barrel bands, one forward one rear carrying the forward sling swivel. Iron trumpet-headed ramrod with cupped tip. Unmarked flat iron sideplate, large iron triggerguard. Rear sling swivel attached to block screwed to underside of butt. Iron buttplate with broad rounded tang and slight lip at toe, tang mark illegible, tang screw unmarked. Full round tapered barrel, octagonal section for 1.75 inches from breech. Large bayonet bar on the right side of the muzzle, the front supported by a loose ring around the barrel, the rear supported by a loose ring around the barrel, the rear supported by being screwed to a small projecting block on the barrel slightly ahead of the fore-end. Small semi-circular foresight on a low block, tangent leaf backsight graduated from 100 to 800 metres on a bed welded to barrel. Small bulbous nipple seat, small backsight block screwed to the barrel tang and contoured to fit the rear of the breech and the corresponding part of the stock. The flat breechplug and progressive four groove rectangular rifling, giving a twist of half a turn in the length of the barrel, suggest the Minie system. The bayonet bar is of the type fitted to the earlier Bersaglieri rifles.
