Notes

The design of the 'Mousqueton des Cents-Guardes' was due to Captain Treuille de Beaulieu (later General). The rifles were provided with a long sword-bayonet, the intention being that the rifle with bayonet-fixed should serve as a lance. See bayonet No X.292 which belongs to this rifle. The Cent-Guardes were a squadron of one hundred picked men, equipped as cuirassiers and mainly concerned with escort duties connected with the Imperial household.
