Object Title

Wellington's Telescope

Carried by the Duke of Wellington, this wooden-barrelled brass telescope was made by Matthew Berge (working 1802-7). Berge worked for one of the greatest telescope makers of the 18th Century, Jesse Ramsden. After Berge took over Ramsden's business in 1800 he titled himself 'Berge, late Ramsden', as is engraved on the first barrel of this telescope. During his time in office as Prime Minister, Wellington presented the telescope to his great friend and Home Secretary Sir Robert Peel.
