Scope and Content

Drawn and etched by George Cr [Cruikshank]'. Later pencil note on card mount, in the hand of Sir James Mann, 'Signed 'Drawn & Etched by George Grimsahw, 1845' one of Pratt's forgeries. (Williams thinks Crookshanks.) ? ex-Fenton or C.A. de C.'. This photograph is associated with the 'Grimshaw Sketchbook', but never formed part of it, although a similar item is illustrated among the loose sketches, e.g. I.143 17. The original was published as a plate in J. James 'A Book of Spurs', and is in fact signed 'Drawn and Etched by George Cruikshank 1855'. It is described in the text as a 'very remarkable specimen of the solleret with the pouleine attached... the finest known example in this country.

Print: 12.5 x 20 cm (4.9 x 7.9 inches). Mount: 28.5 x 38 cm (11.25 x 15 in). Print very faded, especially lower right hand corner where signature is almost illegible.
