Scope and Content

Heavy aircraft of RAF Bomber Command- made a daylight raid upon the Nazi pocket battleships, Scharnhorst and Gneisenau, and the cruiser Prinz Eugen as they lay at Brest on Thursday, December 18th. The two battleships were in dry dock; the cruiser lay in one of the basins protected by anti-submarine nets. Notwithstanding heavy anti-aircraft fire from the warships and shorebatteries, and an attempt by the enemy to obscure the target with a smoke screen, the aircraft pressed home the attack successfully. This attack is an example of co-operation by Bomber Command of the RAF with the Royal Navy. Photo shows: Halifax aircraft flying over the target.
