Scope and Content

In this series of photographs taken during and after an attack by Bostons of RAF Fighter Command on the Naval Stores Depot at Rennes, which serves the U-boat bases on the French Atlantic coast, is one of the great "action" pictures of the air war. One of the Bostons is seen with its bomb doors open and with a bomb just leaving the bay. The sky is dotted with flak bursts and five other Bostons can be seen. the attack made on 8.8.43 caused considerable damage among the dispersed buildings of the depot, as the reconnaissance photograph shows. Among the bomber crews were members of the Lorraine Free French Squadron. Picture shows: One of the attacking Bostons photographed with its bomb doors open, just as a bomb was leaving the bay. At least five other attacking aircraft can be seen, and the sky is dotted with smoke puffs from intense flaks.
