Scope and Content
This photograph, taken during an attack by Bostons of RAF Fighter Command on 16.8.43, provides remarkable evidence of steel and armament works of the Soc Francaise de Constructions Mecaniques, and of the SA des Hauts Fourneaux Forges et Aciers de Dehain, at d'Anzin, were hit by the day raiders. These plants, which lie close together about five miles south west of Valenciennes, France, were attacked from levels ranging from 50 ft to about 1,500 ft., and photographs taken during the raid and by subsequent reconnaissance show that whilst the industrial objectives suffered severely, damage to residential property in the neighbourhood was remarkably light. Picture shows: A general view of the target area when the attack was at its height. At least six Bostons can be seen. Picture issued August 1943.
