Harold Douglas Barnes, OBE, TD, DL, FSA., was born in London in 1876, the son of Edmond Barnes, DL, JP and Sarah Ann Barnes. Admitted in 1901 he joined the firm of Barnes and Bulter Solicitors, 17 John Street, Bedford Row, London, WC1. He was mobilised on 5 August 1914 as a Captain in the 7th Battalion London Regiment, and promoted Major in November. 1914. He joined B.E.F. in France in March 1915, and was severely wounded at the Battle of Festubert on 16 May. He was attached Judge-Advocate-General's Office in November 1916, to the Staff at the War Office in February 1917, and Deputy Assistant Adjutant General in January 1919. Awarded the OBE in 1919.
