Scope and Content

Letters written by Lieutenant (late Captain) Robert Baker, serving with the 32nd Madras Native Infantry, 1857-61, to his sister, Fanny, in England, and others addressed to 'Dear Girls'.

Robert Baker's first letter is from Malta (29 August 1857) on his way out to join his regiment. His next letter is dated 21 November 1857, but the majority of the letters are dated from 1858 from Kamptee (Madras Presidency) where he becomes adjutant. These lively letters range across family matters to detailed descriptions of service life, punitive expeditions chasing bandits, shooting trips and much else.
