Hand-coloured engraving featuring a caricature of Sir Francis Burdett. The original caricature was dated 16 Jan. 1799 but this copy is an 1851 reprint. Entitled CITIZENS VISITING THE Bastille iit refers to Burdett's campaign against harsh conditions in Coldbath Fields prison, nicknamed 'the Bastille' mocking his reforming zeal andhis sympathy with the French Revolution.
On the reverse is a black and white cartoon again by Gillray entitled 'Horrors of the Irish Union; Botheration of Poor Pat - or a Whiser across the Channel. This shows Britannia seated on the left holding a poster that reads 'Union of Liberty Trade & Liberty' speaking to an shabbily-dressed Irishman, Pat, across the Irish Sea.
