The author originally known only as 'Bob' has been identified as Robert Preston (later Robert Campbell-Preston of Ardchattan Priory), Captain Preston is listed as one of the 27 officers and 800 men of the 4th Argyle and Sutherland Highlanders who embarked on the transport, City or Rome, which left Queenstown on 18 January 1900 [London Times shipping list, 19 January 1900]
