Administrative / Biographical History

Sir Thomas Blomefield was appointed Inspector of Artillery at the ordnance establishment at Woolwich in 1780 and held this post until his death in 1822. He was intimately involved in the development of effective tools and techniques for the assessment of ordnance, and regularly particpated in experiments in gunnery. Between 1779 and 1793 he produced a series of detailed reports on the military ordnance deployed on the eastern and southern coasts of England. Blomefield also commanded the artillery in the expedition to Copenhagen in 1807
