Scope and Content

View of Horse Armoury showing mounted and standing figures after the alterations made by Sir Samuel Meyrick in 1826-27. The equestrian figures are shown behind an iron railing. A Yeomen Warder is showing the Line to two ladies and two boys. The engraving corresponds with the description to be found in the Tower Guide Book of 1827. Over each figure is a gothic arch from the apex of which is fixed a banner with their name, rank, and dates. It is possible to identify the figures of Charles I in his gilt armou; Thomas Wentworth, Earl of Strafford; George Villiers, Duke of Buckingham; Henry Stuart, Prince of Wales; and Thomas Howard, Earl of Arundel. To the right of Charles I is the horse of James II although his armour cannot be seen. Beyond the figure of Arundel little detail can be discerned., From original engraving by Sir John Gilbert (1817-97) and Henry Melville (fl.1826-41)
