Scope and Content

Containing manuscript copies of letters describing the writer's experiences during the Peninsular War from his embarkation at Portsmouth in January 1809, through the various campaigns to his departure from Lisbon in January 1813. He was present (but not closely involved) in the battles of Bussaco (27th September 1810) and Salamanca (22nd July 1812) and the storming of Cuidad Rodrigo (18th-19th January 1812)

Letter book approximately 22 x 18 cm, 140 p., some 21,1000 words. Accompanied by a modern transcript bound in cloth to match the box

Keate was later colonel of the Regiment and lived to claim the Military General Service Medal with three clasps (Bussaco, Cuidad Rodrigo and Salamanca) in 1849.

Obituary. Nov. 23 [1850] In Half Moon-Street [Picaddily, London], Colonel William Augustus Keate, late of the Scots Fusilier Guards, in which he became Ensign 1800, Lieut, and Captain 1804, Captain and Lieut.-Colonel 1813, Colonel 1825. He served in the Peninsula from the early part of the war to Jan. 1818. He was for many years Equerry to his late R.H. the Duke of Cambridge, and received the war medal with three clasps for Busaco, Ciudad Rodrigo, and Salamanca. From the Gentleman's Magazine.
