British Parliamentary Paper 431. Jhansi was an important princely state to the south west of Gwalior in Central India. In 1857 it rose to prominence when its female ruler, the Rani, took a leading role against the British during the Mutiny. This paper deals with the problems of succession. Maharajah Gungadhur, the Rajah of Jhansi, died in the end of November 1853. He left no child, but on the day before he died he adopted a son. His widow, the Luchsmee Baee, then solicited the Government of India to recognise the boy as the new Rajah of Jhansi. Lord Dalhousie, Governor-General at the time, decided that under the Doctrine of Lapse, the administration of Jhansi should be assumed by the British [Bookseller's description]
